I got the Nikon one around the time of the 2012 Olympics. Cannot compare it with the Tamron as I didn’t have both.
It did what I wanted, but was soft at the long end and slow aperture wise. Given I could only take one lens into the venues, it was brilliant.

Yup, a suitable connector should do it. a laptop drive shouldn't need any additional power, just what comes from the USB connector. I've done this many times.
The format of the drive will be a factor, as will any encryption.
Was at an event (not as photographer) and had taken my OM-1 to get a few shots when I was idle.
Shock! Battery on 1%. In the past this would have been a deal breaker. Then I remembered the in-camera USB C charging, and just gave it a boost with my computer charger. (y)
